Consultant Pediatric Neurologist
Dr. Bindu Parayil Sankaran is a Paediatric Neurologist with over 12 years of consultant experience. She has special interests in neurogenetic disorders especially childhood genetic epilepsy syndromes, neuromuscular disorders, neurodevelopmental and neurometabolic disorders.
Dr. Sankaran graduated in medicine (1995) and completed her specialist training in Paediatrics (1999) from India. After this, she completed her Neurology training (2004) from the prestigious National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) Bangalore India. Subsequently, she joined as a faculty in the Dept.of Neurology, NIMHANS in 2006 and served as a Staff Specialist Paediatric Neurologist and later as Professor of Neurology till she migrated to Australia in 2018.
In Australia, she worked in the Dept. of Neurology at Children’s Hospital Westmead in 2018 and 2019 to undertake fellowships in Neurogenetics and Neurology. She has also completed a PhD (2018) from Maastricht University, Netherlands, investigating the role of brain MRI findings and phenotype-genotype correlations in patients with mitochondrial disorders.
Being a clinical academic, Dr. Sankaran has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers in the field of Paediatric Neurology especially childhood neurogenetic and metabolic disorders. She has several competitive research grants from various research bodies including Mito Foundation Australia (2018), to her credit and supervised research projects of many trainee neurologists. Dr. Sankaran is currently pursuing a clinical research fellowship focusing on mitochondrial disorders in the Department of Genetic metabolic disorders service and Neurology, Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
