What Is a Neurologist?
Neurologists are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the brain and nervous system. They do not perform surgery. If surgery is needed they will refer to a specialist neurosurgeon.
When a patient has a neurological disorder that requires frequent care, a neurologist is often the principal care provider.
They diagnose and treat conditions like stroke, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, multiple sclerosis, migraine and other headaches, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, neuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome.

What to expect at my first appointment with my doctor?
Initial consultations take from 45 to 60 minutes, and involve a comprehensive assessment and examination.
During a neurological examination, the neurologist reviews the patient’s health history with special attention to the patients current condition and the symptoms you’re currently experiencing. The patient then takes a neurological exam. Typically, the exam tests vision, strength, coordination, reflexes, memory, reasoning and problem-solving abilities and sensation. This information helps the neurologist determine if the problem is in the nervous system.
The results of your test will help your neurologist determine if your problem stems from the brain or nervous system. You may need further testing to confirm a diagnosis or determine which treatment is best for you.
At the end of the consultation, your doctor will usually devise a plan of investigation and further treatment which will be discussed with you and confirmed via a detailed letter to your referring doctor.
Please arrive 15 minutes early for registration and to fill in a patient questionnaire.
I’m an existing patient known to my doctor, what do I bring to my next appointment?
Existing patients of the doctors we support are responsible for bringing a valid referral (GP referrals are valid for 12 months, Specialist 3 months).
Having a referral enables patients to get a Medicare rebate.
How to prepare for your appointment?
To prepare for your consultation:
- Write down your symptoms and keep track of anything that seems to trigger them. Take note of how long your symptoms last, if any new ones develop, and all other changes that might be relevant.
- Bring along your other health information including medications, allergies, previous illnesses, and your family’s history of disease.
- Make a list of any questions that you have.
- Have your previous test results sent to your neurologist, or bring them to your appointment.
- Consider bringing friend or family member to your appointment to help you take notes, and make sure you don’t miss anything.
- Ask your neurologist about a follow-up appointment so that you know when you’ll next see them and can be prepared.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, especially if you’re confused about something. Make sure you understand your diagnosis and treatment and any further steps you need to take.
What are the Consultation Fees?
What do I bring to the appointment?
Please bring the following to your appointment for your doctor’s consideration and to facilitate our provision of administrative support::
- Referral letter from your GP, family physician or other doctor
- A list of all your medications including doses
- Your Medicare card, Veterans’ Affairs card, Age or Disability Support Pension Card
- Your actual X-rays, MRIs and CT scans; copies of results of relevant tests, and any other relevant information
- A friend or family member (if you wish)
Tests: Will I see my neurologist on the day of my test?
A request for a test is different from a consultation. Like any other diagnostic testing (e.g. MRI and other scans) you are referred just for the test and your referring doctor will then interpret the results and discuss further management or actions.
